DIY Chalk Paint & Build.com Review

I absolutely love being able to get my hands dirty with a good DIY project. It is my idea of therapy. I could get lost for hours in DIY projects. I think it is something about the outcome that I really look forward to and taking a step back and having that " ah-ha" moment of achievement.

I got lucky with this beautiful vintage piece. It was handed down in the family and I fell head over heels for this desk. It was screaming my name and someday it will fit perfectly in our vintage farm house....or newer home that mocks the vintage build. Now on what I did do the desk and the how to and of course an amazing review!

How to use chalk paint/ desk make over

  1. Let me start of by telling you what all I used first and what you will need. Tools and products, etc and where you can go purchase them.
The desk- Handed down through the family. You may honestly and seriously paint pretty much anything.
White chalk paint- I bought mine from The Home Depot. Let me tell you ahead of time so you don't find out like me, they only sell one brand. Online says otherwise. The in-store brand is "okay" I would go out of your way to special order a good quality chalk paint or drive somewhere. There now you know my honest truth on that one!
Paint brushes- I researched and even tried out the expressive paint brushes and the cheapest ones you can buy. Again from The Home Depot. I love using the cheap ones ( pictured at the bottom ) and I am not the only blogger who has said that. Other paint brushes hold too much paint as you start to get into your project.
An orbit sander- It is true that you don't need to sand before using chalk paint. That is one of the perks. I did however sand this desk because the previous paint job and brush strokes all over you could feel like ridges. I received my orbit sander as a review from build.com My orbital sander was very easy to use. I do recommend to use it outdoors or in a closed off space like a basement.

Build.com is such an amazing home improvement website where you can shop online and purchase just about anything to do your next home DIY project! Mothers day or even  Fathers Day is around the corner...hint hint for all those DIY lovers out there! They ship quickly and my orders came in just right. I couldn't have been any happier. The knobs on the desk are also from build.com and that goes to show you they truly have just about everything and styles that meet your needs.

2. Now I will instruct you how to use the chalk paint. It is fairly simple.

Sand your surface if you would like.
Get everything prepped.
Start painting in one direction until everything is covered.
Let dry and apply a second coat. Sometimes it may take up to three coats. Or not even.
In the end you may apply the chalk pain wax. I do sometimes. it is suppose to help seal it and make it easier to wash.
Remember to only wash with a wet cloth.
